Oese wins in Smolensk with brakes on fire

Markus Oestreich showed the Russian croud all of his class with an unbelievable performance. With his rear brakes on fire towards the end of the race he held on to win Saturday´s handicap race at the sixth round of the European Truck Truck Racing Championship in Smolensk, Russia. From the beginning of the Russian truck battle luck was not on our side. The flames flickering from the brake calipers was a relatively small problem that fortunately didn´t cost us the victory. After all the other problems suffered early in the weekend the victory was a great result.
„Some of the things that have happened to us since we arrived in Smolensk have been unbelievable. During Friday’s press drives we broke two turbos and a gearbox. We took it as luck that this didn´t happen in todays races but we didn´t know that another turbo would break in Saturday´s first free practice. In the second race then a cooling system hose failed on one of the trucks putting the engine at risk of serious damage. The most bad luck fell on Adam this time. It is crazy. It looks like when we inhale Russian air everything falls apart,“ said one of the mechanics Jan Richter.
The championship race saw us narrowly miss out on the podium although our Renault express train finished in formation again. Fourth was Markus Bösiger, fifth Adam Lacko and sixth Markus Oestreich. Reigning champion Antonio Albacete finished first ahead of Jochen Hahn and David Vršecký from Buggyra.
Fortune was finally on our side in the handicap race when on the tight and technical track Markus Oestreich worked his way through to the lead of the race and was able to maintain his position despite flames flickering from his rear brake calipers during the closing laps. He finished ahead of Chris Levett in second and Stuart Oliver third. „In between the two races there was not a lot of time and after servicing some parts we were not able to completely fill the water tanks for the brake cooling and four laps before the end of the race i ran out of water so eventually my rear calipers caught fire. It was an unpleasant feeling to smell the smoke but fortunately everything ended up well,“ said with relief Markus Oestreich after the race.
Adam Lacko suffered the bad luck this time after a cooling system hose suffered damage meaning he was forced to retire from the race. A ten second penalty handed to Markus Bosiger after the race meant that he was finally classified sixth.
