Mario had the most powerful moment in twenty-three years‘ career in Most
12.9.2011
Originally, he is a constructor from Germany. However, he has lived in Czech for more than ten years, having settled in Židovice near Roudnice with his wife Klára. His working discipline is incredible. In fact, who hasn’t seen him wouldn’t believe it. Thanks to his dilligence and skillfulness combined with a vision and determination he built our team from scratch last year. The Czech number one formation is attacking the European championship title in its second season. And it was Mario Kress who scored a historic result at the recent event in Most – sensationally, entire winners‘ podium after the main race was occupied by his pilots.
Mario, what did the championship stop in Most mean for you and the MKR team?
The weekend in Most was the most successful one in MKR’s existence. At the home track we managed to turn our dream into reality. We have been racing with three trucks this season and we really wished we could send all of them to the podium one day. Now the team has done something incredible. Moreover, Adam Lacko has proved he truly is a Czech pilot. His performance in home environment was amazing, he came first on Saturday but had a bit of bad luck in the second race. All guys had great timed practice sessions, but we also had a few downs. For instance after Oestreich’s accident on Saturday we had a lot to do, working the whole night until six in the morning on Sunday. Each of us has slept only two hours and we continued on Sunday. Anyway, the trucks were in a great shape after we had re-adjusted them. However, the times in Sunday’s timed practice surprised everyone. I don’t need to comment on what followed in the main Sunday race. It was a fair win, with a great deal of luck of course. Adam had a technical difficulty in the last lap and I must admit that when I saw the first two machines come and Adam was still nowhere to see I almost had a heart attack. I’m sure he wouldn’t have finished another lap. It was a stop where all of us have done a great deal of work. We had many guests there, lot of fans came to watch. I think that Most must have been one of the greatest experiences this year, even bigger than what the audience at the renowned Nürburgring is used to. I believe that we presented ourselves really well here and the whole MKR team’s image reached the top level. We welcomed several famous guests including the singer Matěj Ruppert of Monkey Business or the presenter Ruda z Ostravy. Also the media has highlighted that we have achieved something noone had done here before - a triple. We showed everyone that the MKR brand, which emerged as a new team last year and made a double in Most right away, came with three trucks and scored a triple.
Can we say that the races in Most were the most important stop of the Championship for the MKR team?
Yes, I would say so. But it’s also true that from the business‘ point of view, performances at other tracks are more important. Every track is equally essential. But as regards the team, the people who create and work in it, friends and the family around, Most is the most import one for MKR.
And for the German constructor Mario Kress?
The same. For the reasons I’ve just mentioned.
Based on Friday’s free practices, could you have predicted that the weekend would be this successful?
The training have showed that we had been prepared perfectly. Yet I would be careful to state prematurely that this means something. The competition often saves the best for later and it could be just their strategy that they let you bite off just a little bit but they aren’t actually going over their limit. Therefore it would be very bold to expect something like that. Surely, now I can say that this was all true, that both of the Friday’s free practice sessions that we have won had pointed to a successful weekend and we made sure everyone was ready for Saturday’s timed practice.
The team has three races to go. Adam Lacko is currently on the third place. What else do you expect? What could change?
We must think how to move forward constantly because our situation is not an easy one. We are past a half of the season now, Adam has had his share of bad luck, many problems but I’m sure that if it hadn’t been this way, he would be fighting for a second spot today, or even the Championship title with Jochen. Naturally I want to give a little nudge to Adam now because he has only twenty-six points less than Antonio on the second, so if Adam continues what he’s been showing until now and Antonio isn’t so lucky anymore, we could end up on the second rank with Adam. Besides, there’s the team competition, too. Our MKR is losing thirty-two points to Nittel’s Cepsy and as you now, team points are recorded for two trucks, so thirty-two points doesn’t need to mean anything. So there still is a real chance to get the title in the constructors‘ competition.
And as regards the individuals‘ competition?
I wish for a second, third and a fourth position. At the moment, Bösiger performs better than before, we’ve been able to identify the mistakes so he should be well prepared for Zolder. We also know what the problem was in Oese’s case, so I’m also quite confident about him for Zolder. Jochen Hahn deserves to win the title. He’s done an incredible job, he’s far ahead in the point ranking and reaching for the champion’s title.
Mario, you’ve had a twenty-three year career in truck racing. Was the Most experience the best one in all that time?
I think so. People outside the sport might not realize how much work lies behind one single win, how hard it is to win with two cars, let alone when you have all three machines on the podium. How difficult it is to prepare everything so that it’s in the right shape, so that luck and performance come together, all at the same time. It really is the best moment of the twenty-three years because I can say that no one before had ever done anything like this.
